BROTHER CYPRIAN TWO ANNIVERSARIES

Dwie rocznice - 290. urodzin i 240. śmierci, obie związane z bratem Cyprianem, legendarnym mnichem z Czerwonego Klasztoru, kamedułem żyjącym w XVIII wieku. Frater Cyprianus, jak go wówczas zwano, był wziętym lekarzem nie wśród braci w klasztorze, ale także okolicznych mieszkańców; aptekarzem, który sam sporządzał leki (proszki i maści) z ziół zbieranych w górach lub uprawianych przez siebie w klasztornym ogródku; odgrywał rolę pielęgniarza chorych; był cyrulikiem (fryzjerem, balwierzem, felczerem); kucharzem, prowadził refektarz (jadalnię zakonną); łaziebnikiem; alchemikiem (na stronach zielnika spotkać można symbole alchemiczne); łowił ryby w Dunajcu na potrzeby zakonne; sam wyrabiał zwierciadła, przygotowując do nich amalgamat; pisał i malował; hodował i opiekował się roślinami pokojowymi, sadził drzewka owocowe; ponadto był botanikiem, zbierał, suszył i określał rośliny, z których ułożył bogaty zielnik. To wiemy na pewno, a kim był jeszcze? Przede wszystkim zakonnikiem - służył do mszy, napełniał ampułki winem i olejami, stosował się do zakonnych reguł.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Two anniversaries: the 290th of the birth and the 240th of death, both connected to Brother Cyprian, a legendary monk from the Red Monastery (Cˇervený Kláštor), a Camaldolese friar living in the 18th century. Frater Cyprianus, as this was his Latin name, was a physician famous not only among his brethren in the monastery, but also throughout the region; a pharmacist who made his own medications (powders and poultices) from the herbs he collected in the mountains and grew himself in the garden of the monastery; he played the role of attendant and nurse to the sick; he was a barber-surgeon; cook: as he ran their refectory (the monastery’s canteen); bath attendant; alchemist (alchemical symbols are found on the pages of his herbarium); he fished the Dunajec for the needs of the order; and himself made mirrors, also preparing the quicksilver amalgam; he wrote and painted; tended to the pot plants, planted fruit trees in the orchard; and was a botanist who gathered, dried, and described plants, which he arranged into a copious herbarium. This we know for certain, and yet who else was he? Primarily a monk: he did his altar service, filled the cruets with wine and oils, and lived a life organised by the rules of the Order.
